Frequently Asked Questions:

What happens in the first session?

In the first session I will take the client’s case history. Based on the information provided by the client, I put together a therapeutic strategy for overcoming and dealing with the problem presented. I establish the client’s motivation and together we agree upon realistic and achievable goals. Time allowing, an introductory relaxation session finishes off the first session to give the client a taster of what hypnosis feels like.

In the following session I apply the therapeutic strategy, based on the case notes. This involves multi-disciplinary approaches in order to achieve the goals we agreed upon in the first session.

How long does a session last?

A session lasts between one and two hours. There is no set time and I do not rush the client. For me it is important that the client feels relaxed and comfortable in a session without worrying about the time. The initial session usually takes over an hour.

How many sessions are necessary?

The number of sessions depends on the client’s problem. As Clinical Hypnosis is a brief strategic therapy it is in the client’s and therapist’s interest to avoid a dependence on the therapist and keep the number of sessions to a set time limit. Often 2-3 sessions are beneficial enough. It really depends on the individual client and the condition treated.

What is expected of the client?

Clinical Hypnosis is an interpersonal therapy that involves the client actively. All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis and the outcome of the therapy relies on the motivation and commitment of the client to reach his/her goals. Sessions often involve “homework” which are designed to help the client to change his perception of the problem and change his/her behaviour. Therefore high motivation is expected from the client to make beneficial changes, as well as to attend to the agreed sessions on time and to follow the homework recommended to the client.

Are there any side effects?

Hypnosis is a gentle treatment and possible side effects are that the client may have a spontaneous burst of emotion during the session and that the client feels more energised, calm and confident after the session. Clients may even find that they sleep better.

How does the client know he/she is hypnotised?

Every client experiences hypnosis differently, but common sensations in light to medium hypnosis are:

  • Flickering of eyelids
  • Rapid Eye Movement (REM)
  • Changing of breathing: slight speeding up and then slowing down
  • Swallowing
  • Flattening of facial muscles
  • Getting paler or redder
  • Heavy or light arms and legs
  • Lethargy: a “can’t be bothered attitude”
  • No noticing of uncomfortable states such as itching
  • Catalepsy – a catatonic state of muscular rigidity, usually in the arm
  • Time distortion – 45 minutes seem like 5 minutes
  • Slow falling of the head and upper body to the side

In deep hypnosis (Somnambulism) the client will experience the following:

  • He/she won’t move from position he/she started in
  • He/she may open his/her eyes but won’t notice it
  • He/she may rock his/her head
  • Delay in responses
  • He/she may regress
  • He/she may hallucinate
